The final ortho appointment!

Yesterday I had my last orthodontic appointment (pre op) and also had photos taken of my mouth and face. My brace tightening was the same as normal but with the added pleasure of little metal hooks (see below) in between each bracket of my brace - my orthodontist explained these are what my bands will be attached to after the op. For those that don't know the bands will hold my mouth shut after the surgery!

Not the best quality but you can see the hooks in between each section of my brace. I have this top and bottom

He also told me that he and my surgeon have done a “dry run” of my surgery on the moulds they took at my last appointment and have decided to operate on both jaws. During the surgery my top jaw will be broken into three, two teeth will be removed and (I guess a slight postive) my bottom jaw will be moved as one piece instead of them having to break it into sections. I didn't ask too many questions - I was feeling a bit queasy by this point! Finally my orthodontist showed me the model of how my bite will look post surgery and I've got to say it looks like all this will be worth it in the end. If all goes well im going to be a very happy girl.  Im not going yo see my orthodontist again until after the big day now but we have booked an appointment for 8 days post surgery. The last stop before the op is a final pre op clinic with my surgeon next week - eek.

  1. I have been to an orthodontist a few times because I have an open bite. I decided not to get braces because the orthodontist was not for sure if he could correct my problem. Surgery always makes me queasy. Good luck with the surgery I hope everything goes as planned. Thank you for sharing your story.

  2. A jaw surgery takes a long time to finish but the benefits are amazing. Not only does it help correct your bite, but it also improve the health of your teeth and gums. Some people who suffer from sleep apnea can obtain relief through this surgery as well. Hang in there, the results will definitely worth it!
